What do you need?

I have put into place a new practice which has quite surprised me. I think I first did a yoga class about 30 years ago but I have seldom done it at home, and truly I just never thought to do it in the morning.

However shortly after I decided I needed to be more in tune with what was going on in my body, a book appeared with a comprehensive yoga programme all laid out with diagrams.  Done!  

I then constructed a whole morning ritual which includes drinking water to make sure I start off hydrated and 30 minutes meditation.  And I feel really good about that because it meets needs I have at all levels – physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. One of the benefits is also a boost to my self-esteem through committing to doing something and then doing it.

There are two things at stake here:  firstly, knowing what you need and then secondly, giving it to yourself.  We often pay a high price for either not knowing or not figuring out how to meet those needs so it’s a very worthwhile pursuit.  

Uncovering Your Needs

Some needs may be obvious.  “I need more sleep” you plaintively say.  In this case your job is now to figure out how to give yourself more sleep and making a commitment to do so. (Remember you can tap to remove the resistances and self criticism around this).  If you are less certain, you can start to uncover what your needs are.  

Start by sitting quietly and taking a few long slow deep breaths.  Bring your awareness into your body, because you want the answers to the questions you are going to be asking to arise from your own inner wisdom, not from the mind.  

The questions you ask depend on what is happening in your life - I’ll give you some examples here to get you started:

  • What do you need in order to feel fulfilled?  (This is a big question which may need considerable exploration).
  • What do you need to express?  (What are you holding back? What gifts or talents do you need to bring into the world?)
  • What do you need to feel more energised?  (Do you need to stop something or start something?)
  • What structure do you need to create so you feel supported? (In any area of your life)
  • What do you need in order to improve your health/finances/career etc.?
  • What do you need in order to feel more secure?  (This might relate to finances or relationships).
  • What do you need to make a commitment to?  (In what area have you not made a stand for yourself?)
  • What do you need in order to navigate the challenge you are facing?  (Do you need to change your thinking, do some tapping, get help, be more courageous, more loving? How can you be more supportive to yourself and gain support from others?)

Taking Responsibility

We’d all like our needs to be met by other people of course, but if they are not giving you what you need, the only way you are empowered is by providing it to yourself.  Also bear in mind that if you don’t know what your needs are, then you can’t ask someone else to meet them.  And it’s not much good expecting another person to be psychic and know what we need - though it’s very tempting!

Time then to reflect on those needs you may not have been aware of and perhaps do some tapping to help you get started in meeting those needs.  As I mentioned at the beginning, the price for not doing it is high – probably higher than you realise.
